According to the U.S. Fire Administration, over 4,000 fires occur on Thanksgiving Day. It is probably no surprise that the majority of those fires are related to the cooking and preparation that goes into making Thanksgiving dinner. To help ensure your Thanksgiving Day festivities remain safe, please keep the following tips in mind.
· Follow all manufacturer guidelines regarding the appropriate use of appliances
· Do not wear loose fitting clothes or long sleeves while cooking
· Always use potholders and oven mitts, not aprons or towels, to handle hot items
· Keep potholders and food wrappers at least three feet away from heat sources
· Make sure your stovetop, burners, and oven are clean and free of debris
· Turn handles of pots and pans on the stove inward to avoid accidents
· Do not overload your counters and stovetops with too many dishes, and only cook with as many pots and pans as there are burners
· Cook on the back burners whenever possible
· Keep hot items away from the edge of counter and tables
· Do not allow young children in the kitchen or near any heat sources
· Set timers to keep track of food items that require extended cooking times
· If you must leave the kitchen while cooking, either turn off the stove or ask another adult to keep watch
· Remain alert when cooking: do not cook under the influence of alcohol or medication
· Never pour water on a grease fire and keep a lid handy to smother pan fires
· Always be prepared for the possibility of a fire: have a home fire escape plan in place, make sure your smoke alarms are installed and working, and keep a fire extinguisher nearby in case of an emergency
· Remember PASS: Pull the pin, Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire, Squeeze the handle, Sweep from side to side
· After your guests leave, designate a responsible adult to walk around the home making sure that all candles and smoking materials are extinguished
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
